My Heart Will Go On (Chapter I)

EXT. TERRACE OF A HIGH BUILDING – DAY

KATE (17) keeps her eyes closed, the wind moves her hair gently.

She opens her eyes and sees a group of pigeons flying towards the sun in the sky.

KATE (V.O.)
Not so long ago my life was completely different.

She turns, standing on the edge of the terrace, leaving the void behind her.

In front, many policemen are pointing guns at her.

They are shouting at Kate, but she doesn’t hear their voices.

KATE (V.O.)
It all started when I met you, Thomas.

CUT TO:

(FLASHBACK)

INT. HIGH SCHOOL CLASS ROOM – DAY

Kate, standing in front of the class, tries to look stoic in front of her new classmates.

TEACHER
This is Kate, our new student, please be kind with her.

Students talk between themselves.

Some look at her with uninterested expresions.

Kate keeps her stoic gaze.

TEACHER
You can sit in the right row, my dear.

Kate nods and walks to the only empty space in the row.

On arrival, she finds a guy lying on the table next to hers.

He’s sleeping.

Kate sits and THOMAS (18) wakes up.

THOMAS
Kate?

KATE
Yes, do we know each other?

THOMAS
Well…

Thomas keeps looking at Kate, but doesn´t say anything.

KATE
Are you okay?

Teacher interrupts.

TEACHER
Are we ready to start the class, miss Kate?

Kate looks at the teacher, nervous.

KATE
Yes, sorry.

Kate looks back at Thomas, finds him sleeping again.

She looks confused.

EXT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM – DAY

The bell rings.

Students leave the classroom.

Kate walks down the hallway to the—

RESTROOM

—where she enters one of the toilet cubicles and closes the door, sits and picks up her phone.

She has a message from Annie, her sister, they TEXT each other.

(Over phone).

ANNIE
How did everything go?

KATE
Normal, nothing interesting. How’re things at home?

ANNIE
I don’t know, Dad’s been yelling again.

KATE
Just stay in your room.

Kate hears the voices of students entering the restroom.

She can hear them talking.

GIRL
I Did you read the last post? I think she goes to this school.

GIRL II
You think she’s really gonna do it?

GIRL I
Didn’t you read what she posted?

Kate keeps listening, she sees a new message from Annie on the phone.

ANNIE
Hope you get back soon.

Kate places a smiling emoji, then puts the phone away.

GIRL I
I don’t know how people can believe in these things.

GIRL II
That’s because you don’t know what the wheel is.

A humming sound is heard. Kate keeps quiet.

The students leave.

Kate gets out of the cubicle and walks to the lavatory.

There’s a drawing made with lipstick on the mirror. A symbol similar to a ship’s rudder.

INT. KATE’S ROOM – NIGHT

The TV is switched on, it’s the news.

ANNIE (8) holds the remote control, lying on the bed.

Kate is at the desk, typing on her laptop.

REPORTER ON TV
An entire family in shock after the unexpected suicide of their 17-year-old daughter. The event occurred during the afternoon…

Kate looks at the TV. The images show the front of a school.

ANNIE
Isn’t that your school, Kate?

REPORTER ON TV
The police have information about an internet forum that promotes suicides among people, a page known as “the wheel of samsara”.

The same symbol that Kate saw appears in the news.

On walls on the street, a tatoo on a person’s arm.

Suddenly, the sound of a plate breaking is heard from outside the room.

ANNIE
Kate…

Kate walks to the door, opens it carefully.

A loud argument between two adults is heard downstairs.

Words are not understood.

ANNIE
Can I sleep in your room tonight?

Kate smiles at Annie and closes the door.

KATE
Of course you can.

Annie smiles back and slips into the bedclothes.

Kate returns to the desk.

On the computer, she opens the browser and searches for “wheel of samsara”.

Information about Indian culture appears.

Suddenly, her phone vibrates.

There’s a new email. “Want to get off the wheel, Kate?”

Kate pauses, she looks at Annie on the bed.

Then open the browser on the computer.

She opens her email.

Finds the new one, inside there’s an encrypted link.

Click.

“Welcome to the wheel of samsara. Fear will keep you in this world. Beyond fear, there’s truth”.

Then two options appear.

I want to stay in this world/I want to go through the door.

New shouts from the discussion outside the room are heard.

Annoyed, Kate presses ” I want to go through the door”.

She enters the main page of the forum, where she can see a series of posts from different people, she clicks and reads some of them.

“My life was meaningless, I swear, my family always made me feel like I was worthless”.

“He abused me for years, I didn’t know what to do”.

“I always wondered if life would always be the same, would this suffering ever end?”.

All posts end the same, “I’m thankful for having dared to post in this forum. Now I know what’s beyond the door.”

Kate opens a new topic on the forum and types.

“Is this real? I would like to escape from this world even for a few seconds”.

Kate leans against the back of the chair, she sighs.

Beep!

Someone has replied to her post.

“Look out the window.”

Surprised, Kate approaches the window and nervously draws the curtains.

Outside, in the street, she sees a person waving at her.

It’s Thomas.

Kate turns to the computer, a new message pops up; “I’ll wait for you outside, here’s your chance”.

Kate looks at Annie, she is still sleeping.
